The virtuosity of Manuel Quiroga
(lecture-concert)
The Galician violinist Manuel Quiroga (Pontevedra 1892-1961) was one of the great violin virtuosos of his time and is considered together with Pablo Sarasate and Pau Casals as one of the three most important Spanish string players in history.
After winning the Paris Conservatory competition in 1911, he began a career full of successes that would lead him to perform in the main concert halls of Europe and America, as well as to perform as a soloist with the most prestigious orchestras.
The unanimous recognition by the public, musicians (the great Eugène Ysaÿe would dedicate his 6th sonata for solo violin to him), and institutions (the French and Spanish governments would award him with their highest distinctions: “La Légion D’Honneur” and “La Encomienda de Alfonso X El Sabio”), would be sadly disrupted by a run down in 1937 in New York City, which would suddenly ended his career at the age of 45.
In this lecture-concert there will be an explanation of his biography highlights and various of his compositions for solo violin will be performed.
