José Manuel Álvarez Losada

Isabel Fèlix

José Manuel Álvarez Losada and pianist Isabel Fèlix, are both professors at the Conservatorio Superior de las Islas Baleares and have solid artistic careers, both as soloists and chamber music performers.

This concert is entirely dedicated to works composed by great violinists throughout history, from the Baroque to the 19th and 20th centuries, with the presence of the three greatest exponents of this instrument in Spain: Pablo de Sarasate, Joan Manén, and Manuel Quiroga.

The recital will open with Giuseppe Tartini's Devil's Trill sonata, a piece the composer attributed to a dream in which he heard the devil play a sonata "so marvelous and so beautiful, performed with such artistry and intelligence, such as I had never dreamed of in my wildest dreams."

Next, there will be a performance of La Campanella by Niccolò Paganini, undoubtedly the most famous violinist in history, whose dazzling virtuosity was attributed to a demonic pact. Both this piece and the previous one were revised and arranged by Fritz Kreisler, one of the most important violinists of the 20th century.

The performers will then play the Polonaise de concert by Henryk Wieniawski, one of the greatest virtuosos of his time and composer of pieces of great Romantic inspiration and extreme technical difficulty.

The concert will continue with Iberian Dance No. 2 by Joan Manén, a work inspired by Spanish rhythms, and with the Habanera by Galician violinist Manuel Quiroga, considered one of the greatest performers of the first third of the 20th century and whose fascinating work remains unjustly forgotten today.

Finally, the program will conclude with two of Pablo Sarasate's most brilliant works: his Introduction and Tarantella, and his Fantasia on Themes from Bizet's Carmen, in which the Navarrese musician masterfully displays the technical and expressive possibilities of the violin.
